The social network is the most commonly used tool of communication amongst young people these days. It helps them stay in touch with friends all over the world regardless of distance and it’s also a platform to meet and make new friends. The number of social networking sites is daily on the rise, so also the users of the different sites.

According to Wikipedia, there are over 1 billion active users on Facebook, this goes to buttress the fact that social media is the new communication tool among people all over the world. Social networking has made the world a global village.

Twitter is another social network which was launched in 2006, it has over 500 million active users. It seems to be the social network everyone is crazy about at present, because there’s something unique about it that makes it stand out amongst other social networking sites.

Twitter is a microblogging site that is fast gaining more acceptance among youths all over the world. So before you open that twitter account, there are some things I think you should know.

I know most people who are interested in having a Twitter account must have been familiar with the following terms (Username/E-mail & Password). These are the most important things you need to open a Twitter account.

One unique thing about the Twitter username is that, it’s different from all other social networking sites username. It comes with @ (@twitter) symbol before your name. Twitter is different from most of the common social networks, because it has its own unique terms which enables its users navigate the site properly.

Here are some essential terms you need to know before you open that Twitter account:

DIRECT MESSAGE (DM): Just like the name, its a message to you that enters your inbox directly. It is exclusively visible to you and the sender.

TIMELINE (TL): This is the compilation of tweets you see on your twitter home page. Usually tweets by those you are following and those who are following you on twitter.

MENTIONS /REPLIES : This is when a person replies your tweet by mentioning what you wrote previously or a direct reply without quoting your previous tweet.

FOLLOWERS: These are twitter users who are following you on twitter and it’s only fair to follow back when you are followed on Twitter.

FOLLOWING: This is when you follow a user on Twitter. Usually celebrities always have more followers on twitter,you can follow them too, to be informed of their day to day experiences.

HASHTAG(#): When a particular topic or issue is trending, when you tweet about it you can use the hashtag. e.g #FollowBackFriday
